History

A short history of the area starts in 1540 when DeSoto and his men explored the area that was inhabited by the Cherokee Indians. They were in search of Gold. Evidence of this has been found in old tunnels, shafts, Spanish Coat of Arms markings and coin molds found a long the river banks. In the early 1800 President Andrew Jackson sent 7,000 troops into western North Carolina who built six forts to over see the removal of the Cherokee Indians to Oklahoma. The largest of these forts was Fort Butler which later became Murphy, North Carolina. The removal of the Cherokee Indians became know as “The Trail Of Tears” Logging became the first in the area and was the primary means of making a living. The first church in the area was built in 1869 and is still standing, Harshaw Chapel a Methodist Church now a historic site. The present courthouse, the fourth, is built from marble quarried from the county and is 70 years old. In 1922 the first paved highway opened from Murphy to the Georgia line and in 1926 the road from Murphy to Asheville opened. In 1936 the Tennessee Valley Authority started construction on the Hiawassee Dam. The Hiawassee, Valley and Nottely Rivers supply water to form Lake Hiawassee which starts in Murphy and with Lake Apalachia extends to the Tennessee Border. Currently the population of Cherokee County is 25,000 with it swelling during the Spring, Summer and Fall seasons. A list of National Register of Historic Places Include:
